Common uPVC Door Lock Problems and How to Fix Them

uPVC doors are fitted on millions of homes across Oldham and the UK, and while they're generally reliable, they can develop problems over time. If your uPVC door is stiff to lock, won't lock at all, or the handle feels loose or floppy, you're not alone — these are some of the most common callouts our locksmiths attend.

The most frequent problem is a stiff or hard-to-lock door. This is usually caused by the door dropping slightly on its hinges over time, causing the locking points to misalign with the keep plates on the frame. In many cases, this can be fixed by adjusting the hinges to lift the door back into the correct position — a job that takes a skilled locksmith only a few minutes.

A floppy or spinning door handle usually indicates a broken gearbox — the mechanism inside the door that connects the handle to the locking points. uPVC door gearboxes contain moving parts that wear out over time, especially if the door has been forced shut or slammed repeatedly. Replacing the gearbox is a common repair that our locksmiths carry out regularly.

If your key turns but the door won't lock, the problem is often a broken or worn euro cylinder. The cylinder is the part of the lock you insert your key into, and it can wear out or become damaged over time. Replacing it with a new anti-snap euro cylinder is quick and also improves your security.

Another common issue is the door locking but not sealing properly, leaving gaps where draughts can get in. This is often caused by worn or compressed rubber seals, or by the door not compressing against the frame when locked. While seal replacement is usually a job for a door specialist, a locksmith can adjust the locking mechanism to pull the door tighter against the frame.

One problem you should never ignore is a door that suddenly becomes very easy to lock after being stiff. This can indicate that one or more of the locking points has broken off inside the mechanism, meaning your door isn't actually securing properly even though it appears to be locked. If you notice this, call a locksmith promptly.
