How Do Locksmiths Open Locked Doors? Methods Explained
When you're locked out and a locksmith arrives, they seem to work magic — getting you back inside your home in minutes, often without any visible damage. But how do they actually do it? Here's a look at the main techniques professional locksmiths use.
Lock picking is the classic technique. Using specialist tools — a tension wrench and pick — the locksmith manipulates the individual pins or levers inside the lock to the correct positions, mimicking the action of the correct key. A skilled locksmith can pick most standard residential locks in a few minutes. This is a completely non-destructive technique.
Lock bumping uses a specially cut 'bump key' that, when inserted and struck with a tool, causes the lock pins to jump momentarily, allowing the lock to be turned. It's a fast technique but doesn't work on anti-bump locks — which is one of the reasons we recommend them.
Bypass techniques involve manipulating the door mechanism without operating the lock at all. For example, certain uPVC door locks can be bypassed by carefully manipulating the mechanism through the door edge. Locksmiths know these vulnerabilities and can exploit them for legitimate entry.
For locks that can't be picked or bypassed, drilling may be necessary. This involves drilling through the lock cylinder to destroy the locking mechanism and allow the door to be opened. While this destroys the lock (which will need replacing), it's faster and less damaging than forcing the door.
As a last resort, if none of the above techniques work, forced entry may be required — but a good locksmith will exhaust all non-destructive options first. Forced entry usually involves removing a door panel or using specialist tools to separate the door from the frame.
