Key fishing — also known as 'fishing for keys' or 'letterbox fishing' — is a burglary technique that's becoming increasingly common across Greater Manchester, including Oldham. It involves a criminal pushing a tool (often a wire hook or even a fishing rod-style device) through your letterbox to hook your keys off a nearby table, hook, or shelf.

The technique is shockingly simple and effective. Many people leave their keys on a table or hook right next to the front door for convenience. A skilled key fisher can hook these keys in seconds, let themselves into your home, and steal your car (if car keys are also hooked), valuables, and anything else they want — all without forcing entry, meaning your insurance claim might be complicated.
