Multipoint Lock Problems: Symptoms, Causes, and Solutions
Multipoint locks are the complex mechanisms inside uPVC and composite doors that engage multiple hooks, bolts, and rollers when you lift the handle and turn the key. They're excellent for security, but when they go wrong, they can be frustrating. Here are the most common problems and what causes them.
A stiff handle that's hard to lift or turn is usually caused by one of two things: misalignment between the door and frame (often because the door has dropped slightly on its hinges), or a gearbox that's starting to fail. Misalignment can often be fixed by adjusting the hinges; a failing gearbox needs replacing.
A handle that spins freely without engaging the locks indicates a broken gearbox β the central mechanism that connects the handle to the locking points. This is a common failure point because the gearbox contains moving parts that wear out over time. Replacement is essential, as your door isn't actually secure even though it may appear to be closed.
If the door locks on the handle but won't lock with the key, the euro cylinder may be worn or the cam (the rotating part on the back of the cylinder) may have broken. Replacing the euro cylinder usually fixes this issue.
Hooks or rollers that don't fully engage with the keep plates can be caused by worn components, misalignment, or partially broken hooks inside the mechanism. This reduces security because the door isn't fully locked even when the mechanism is operated.
