Every Type of Door Lock Explained: A Visual Guide

There are dozens of different types of door locks available, and knowing which one you have — or which one you need — can be confusing. Here's a plain-English guide to every common type of residential door lock.

Mortice deadlocks are embedded within the body of a wooden door. You can identify them by the rectangular faceplate visible on the edge of the door. Five-lever mortice deadlocks to BS3621 are the gold standard for wooden door security. They're operated by a key from both sides and throw a solid steel bolt into the door frame.

Rim locks (including Yale-type night latches) are mounted on the surface of the door rather than being embedded within it. The lock body is visible on the inside of the door, with the cylinder visible on the outside. Rim automatic deadlatches are the most secure type — they lock automatically when the door is closed and can be deadlocked with a key.

Euro cylinder locks are the cylindrical locks found on virtually all uPVC and composite doors. They come in various types: key-key (operated by a key from both sides), key-turn (key on one side, thumb turn on the other), and single-sided (key on one side only). The cylinder fits into a multipoint locking mechanism.

Multipoint locks are the full locking mechanisms inside uPVC and composite doors. They engage multiple locking points (hooks, bolts, and rollers) around the door frame for maximum security. They're operated by lifting the handle and turning the key in the euro cylinder.

Padlocks are portable locks used to secure gates, sheds, garages, and storage units. Key-operated padlocks are generally more secure than combination types. Look for Sold Secure or CEN-rated padlocks with hardened steel shackles.

Digital/smart locks use electronic mechanisms that can be opened with codes, fingerprints, smartphones, or key cards. They're growing in popularity but should be chosen carefully to ensure insurance compatibility.
