Lock Maintenance: Simple Tips to Keep Your Locks Working Perfectly
Most people never think about maintaining their locks until something goes wrong. But a little regular maintenance can prevent lockouts, extend the life of your locks, and ensure your home stays properly secured. Here are our top maintenance tips.
Lubricate your locks at least twice a year using a PTFE-based spray lubricant or graphite powder. Spray a small amount into the keyhole and then insert and turn your key several times to distribute the lubricant. Never use WD-40 or oil-based lubricants on locks β these attract dust and dirt that can clog the mechanism over time.
Check that all your locks engage smoothly. If you have to lift, push, or jiggle your door to get it to lock, something is misaligned. This won't fix itself and will only get worse over time. For uPVC doors, the hinges may need adjusting. For wooden doors, the door may have swollen or dropped on its hinges.
Inspect your keys for wear. A worn key won't operate the lock as smoothly as a new one, putting extra stress on both the key and the mechanism. If your key looks smooth and featureless where it should have defined cuts and ridges, get a new one cut from the original spare rather than from the worn copy.
Test all your window locks regularly β particularly those you don't use often. It's common to discover that a window lock has seized or broken only when you actually need to open the window. A quick test once a month ensures everything is working.
If you notice any lock or door problem, address it promptly rather than waiting for it to become an emergency. A stiff lock today could be a broken lock β and a lockout β tomorrow. Call Oldham Locksmiths on 07949 139 475 for lock servicing and maintenance.
