A key snapping in your lock is one of those things that seems impossible until it happens to you. One moment you're turning your key as normal, the next you're standing at your door holding half a key with the other half stuck inside the lock. It's frustrating, but it's also very common — and usually fixable without replacing the entire lock.

Keys snap for several reasons. The most common is metal fatigue from repeated bending — if you've ever noticed your key bending slightly as you turn it, that's putting stress on the metal that weakens it over time. Worn locks that are stiff to operate put extra force on the key, accelerating this process. Very cold weather can also make key metal more brittle.

If your key snaps, don't try to extract it yourself using pliers, tweezers, or superglue — you're likely to push the broken piece further into the lock or damage the mechanism.
